Russian language, culture introduced to PSU students and staff via ASUHP collaboration

PSU hosted Russian language and cultural courses on three campuses (Phuket, Pattani, Hat Yai) from 28 August to 6 September 2023. Guided by native Russian-speaking experts from Shukshin Altai State University for Humanities and Pedagogy (ASUHP), course participants explored contemporary Russian culture, and learned phrases for basic conversation.

The ASUHP delegation, led by linguistics professor Dr. Mikhail Vlasov, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation at ASUHP, included academics of history and psychology, along with cultural performers. The sessions were conducted in English, or in Russian with English interpretation, and focused on phonetics, vocabulary, historical perspectives, and unique cultural nuances. Hands-on practical sessions involved Russian folktales adapted to Thai context, later enacted on stage by Thai participants speaking Russian.

The program is part of an ambitious collaboration that began with the establishment of the Russian Language Center on PSU’s Phuket Campus on 28 August 2023. The center opening ceremony was chaired by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pun Thongchumum, Vice President of Phuket Campus, and honored by Mr. Vladimir Sosnov, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Phuket. The center focuses on teaching Russian for conversation, business, daily life, and travel, while also promoting cross-cultural understanding. The center is open to students, staff, entrepreneurs, and the general public.

This multifaceted academic partnership with ASUHP provides unique opportunities for PSU students, staff, and the public to immerse themselves in the rich culture, language, and history of Russia. Importantly, the programs also contribute to PSU’s linguistic diversity, and foster the deep cross-cultural understanding necessary for a more effective discourse between the two nations.
