On 27 March 2024, the PSU Faculty of Medicine, in collaboration with the International Peace Foundation (IPF), and with support from Mitsui Fudosan Asia (Thailand) Co., Ltd, Dusit Thani Hotel and Resort, Kasikornbank, and BMW, hosted a special lecture by Prof. Randy W. Schekman, a Nobel laureate in Medicine. The talk, titled “The role of basic science in biotechnology” was held under the JAPAN-ASEAN BRIDGES Event Series in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Japan-ASEAN relations and the 55th anniversary of PSU. The event was opened by PSU President, Asst. Prof. Dr. Niwat Keawpradub, while Mr. Uwe Morawetz, Founding Chairman of the International Peace Foundation, provided a reporting speech, and Assoc. Prof. Ruangsak Lertkhachonsuk, M.D., Dean, Faculty of Medicine gave a welcome remark. Prof. Randy W. Schekman is an American biochemist and cell biologist who was awarded the Nobel laureate in Medicine in the year 2013 for the fundamental genetic information of intracellular transport systems. The small vesicles, resembling tiny bubbles, transport various molecules such as enzymes, hormones, and chemicals in the brain to specific destinations within the cell. This transport process is normally finely controlled, but if the system malfunctions, it can lead to various diseases related to genetic abnormalities in the human body.

The Nobel laureate in Medicine awarded to Prof. Schekman is a tribute to his profound understanding of the genetic mechanisms underlying vesicle transport. Additionally, he has awarded the Gairdner Foundation International Award and the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award. He has also been elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Niwat stated that this special lecture held by Nobel laureate is the 5th and final event under the JAPAN-ASEAN BRIDGES Event Series, jointly organized by the university and the International Peace Foundation (IPF) as the host. This event was held to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the establishment of PSU in the year 2023.

"PSU is a leader in innovation, research, and higher education in the southern region and the country as a whole. A significant part of this achievements emerged from the Faculty of Medicine, which has been driving the university since its inception. It is believed that the special lecture by Prof. Randy W. Schekman on 'The role of basic science in biotechnology' will create awareness within the global research community, enhance the reputation of PSU, and inspire researchers, faculty members, students, and all participants to contribute to the advancement of the community and society."
