Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Attends Southern Border Youth Khon Performance at PSU Pattani Campus

On September 16, 2026, at 2:15 p.m., Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn privately visited Prince of Songkla University, Pattani Campus, to attend a Khon performance by young people from Thailand’s southern border provinces. The performance featured an episode from the Ramakien, “The Battle of Indrajit: Nagabas,” at the Chukiat Pitimcharoenkit Auditorium.

Before attending the performance, Her Royal Highness paid homage and laid a wreath at the monument of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkla, before proceeding to the auditorium.

Her Royal Highness was welcomed by Mrs. Pateemoh Sadeeyamu, Governor of Pattani Province; Ms. Ranee Itarat, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Culture; Mr. Anusart Suwanmongkol, Advisor to the Southern Border Youth Khon Club, along with representatives from government agencies and members of the public.

Representing PSU Pattani Campus, Assistant Professor Dr. Attachai Ueranantasan, Vice President for Pattani Campus, and Associate Professor Dr. Montira Leelakriangsak, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Pattani Campus, were among those welcoming Her Royal Highness.

The Southern Border Youth Khon performance was organized by Pattani Province, the Southern Border Youth Khon Club, and partner organizations to honor the royal contributions and carry forward the commitment of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother to preserving and promoting Thailand’s cultural heritage.

A total of 112 young performers from 26 educational institutions across four southern border provinces took part in the performance. Through Khon, the initiative provides young people with opportunities to learn and preserve traditional Thai performing arts, while developing discipline, patience, responsibility, and teamwork within the culturally diverse communities of Thailand’s southern border region.

Following the performance, Her Royal Highness presented bouquets of flowers to representatives of the organizing team and young performers before departing.

The Southern Border Youth Khon initiative began with a youth Khon group in Pattani in 2009, providing opportunities for young people interested in the traditional art form to learn, practice, and perform. It later developed into the Southern Border Youth Khon Project under the Ministry of Culture in 2015, with continued support from Pattani Province and partner networks.

Today, the network extends across Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and four districts of Songkhla Province, with more than 2,000 young people having participated in Khon training and learning activities.

Beyond preserving a valued form of Thai performing arts, the initiative has become a shared learning space, bringing together young people from different cultural backgrounds to learn from one another and grow together within the diversity of Thailand’s southern border communities.
