2.5.3 University access to local farmers and food producers

Metric: National hunger

Provide access to university facilities (e.g. labs, technology, plant stocks) to local farmers and food producers to improve sustainable farming practices.

Prince of Songkla University provides support to local farmers and food producers to promote sustainable agriculture and food production by establishing research institutes/centers as follows:

Food Research and Innovation Institute

Functions as an integrated unit for diverse academic knowledge, offering end-to-end services from research to technology transfer for communities and businesses of all levels.

  1. Develops a system for food product quality and safety verification, enabling certification of products that meet both national and international standards.
  2. Fosters linkages for research and development to enable the commercialization of research results in collaboration with businesses, creating innovative food products that can compete in the global market.
  3. Enhances the capabilities of entrepreneurs, providing them with knowledge and access to information on production technology, quality and safety standards, food innovation, and both domestic and international market channels.

Central Analytical Center: Provides analytical services for agricultural samples to support teaching, research, and services for farmers and the general public.

1. Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives visited Thung Sai Chai Research Center for Innovation in Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food for Society

        On January 28, 2024, Capt. Thamanat Prompow, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, visited the Research Center for Innovation in Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food for Society at Thung Sai Chai area, hosted by PSU Surat Thani. The delegation included Mr. Jetsada Jitrat, Governor of Surat Thani Province, Asst. Prof. Dr. Niwat Keawpradub, PSU President, Asst. Prof. Dr. Pongthep Sutheravut, Vice President for Administration and Strategy, Mr. Chaowapong Thitisawat, Senior Expert for Surat Thani Campus, Mr. Phongsak Jakaew, President of Surat Thani Provincial Administrative Organization, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suchada Tipmontree, Vice President for PSU Surat Thani Campus accompanied by the university’s executives, local government officers, and the community of Chaiya District.

2. SUMMER SCHOOL 2024 Dynamics of Change in Sustainable Agriculture - Enhancing Farming Systems Evaluation to Make Innovation Work
        Prince of Songkla University, associated to the TALENT Programme on Sustainable Landscape Management, offers its 1st Summer School 2024 with the theme “Dynamics of Change in Sustainable Agriculture - Enhancing Farming Systems Evaluation to Make Innovation Work”.
        The Summer School is a graduate and postgraduate course offered to professionals and students in agriculture, natural resource management, landscape management, rural development, sufficiency agriculture and agricultural extension. The course addresses the challenges of change and innovation in agricultural systems in Southeast Asia, with a focus on small scale farming, based on rubber, oil palm and orchard plantations. Tools will be reviewed for a participatory assessment of these systems in response to the markets, the new needs of the society and to the environment. Models of sustainable transformation pathways will be produced.
