5.6.9 Paternity policy

Metric: Women’s progress measures

Have a paternity policy that supports women’s participation by ensuring that fathers can participate in childcare duties.

Prince of Songkla University has policies that support maternity and paternity rights, providing clear entitlements and procedures for staff to take leave during important periods. These include:

  1. Maternity Leave: University employees who wish to take maternity leave must submit or arrange to submit a request for leave to their immediate supervisor or the authorized officer before taking leave. If the employee is unable to submit it in person, they may send a representative to submit it. However, they must submit it within 80 days of childbirth, and a medical certificate is not required for early submission.

Maternity leave can be taken either before or after the childbirth date, but it must not exceed 80 days in total. This includes public holidays during the leave period. Employees who have received permission to take maternity leave and who have given birth may not take additional maternity leave beyond the specified period.

If the employee wishes to cancel or extend the maternity leave, they must request permission to cancel or extend it before the leave expires, and the employee must return to work the day after their leave ends.

In cases where additional leave is required for medical examination, the employee is entitled to take additional leave for up to 90 days. However, the medical leave for examination must be taken at least 28 weeks after pregnancy confirmation.

  2. Paternity Leave: University employees who wish to take leave to support their wife during childbirth must submit or arrange to submit a leave request to their immediate supervisor or the authorized officer before taking leave within 30 days of childbirth. This leave is granted for no more than 15 working days.

University employees who take leave to support their wife during childbirth for up to 30 days are entitled to receive their salary for no more than 15 working days. However, if the leave extends beyond 30 days, the employee is no longer entitled to salary during the additional days taken. In this case, the employee must provide proof of childbirth documentation when submitting the leave request.

These policies aim to support both mothers and fathers, giving them time to care for their families and newborns. They align with principles of fairness in the workplace and family care.
