15.3.3 Local biodiversity included in planning and development

Metric: Supporting land ecosystems through action

Include local biodiversity into any planning and development process (e.g. construction of new buildings)

Thung Yai project by Prince of Songkla University (PSU) highlights the university’s commitment to integrating local biodiversity into its planning and development processes. PSU conducted detailed assessments of the Thung Yai area, focusing on preserving the region’s unique ecosystems and protecting critical habitats. This approach ensures that biodiversity considerations are at the forefront of development initiatives, aiming to safeguard the area’s natural resources.

A key aspect of PSU’s strategy is its collaborative approach. The project involved active engagement with local communities, government agencies, and environmental organizations. By incorporating input from local stakeholders, PSU ensures that traditional knowledge and community needs are reflected in conservation planning. This inclusive method helps build stronger partnerships and promotes sustainable practices that are supported by the community.

PSU also emphasizes sustainable land use planning, where biodiversity conservation is woven into broader regional development strategies. PSU aims to balance ecological preservation with the economic needs of the area, advocating for land use practices that minimize environmental impact while supporting local livelihoods. Additionally, PSU has established monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to track biodiversity indicators over time, allowing for adaptive management that responds to changing ecological conditions.
