Prince of Songkla University, the first university in Southern Thailand, was established
in 1966 in Tambon Ruesamilae, Mueang District, Pattani Province. Initially, it was named the
"University of Southern Thailand."
His Majesty the King graciously granted the university the name "Prince of Songkla University" in honor of his beloved father, His Royal Highness Somdej Chao Fa Mahidol Adulyadej Kromma Luang Songkla Nakarin.
The Parliament passed the Prince of Songkla University Act, which came into effect on March 13. As a result, Prince of Songkla University designated March 13 as its Foundation Day. The university is committed to the development of Southern Thailand, guided by an educational framework that supports economic and social growth, promotes harmony and equality, and serves as a source of academic and community services for both urban and rural areas.
On this day, His Royal Highness Somdej Chao Fa Mahidol Adulyadej Kromma Luang Songkla Nakarin, the father of modern medicine and public health in Thailand, passed away. His visionary contributions to medical education and public health development laid the foundation for Thailand's healthcare system. In recognition of his enduring legacy and dedication to the well-being of the Thai people, Mahidol Day is commemorated annually to honor his life, his service to the nation, and his profound impact on higher education and health sciences in Thailand.
