Discovering Pattani''s Cultural Diversity Through the Pattani Heritage City Route

The PSU Pattani Jacaranda Blue Blossom: Pattani Heritage City Route is one of Prince of Songkla University, Pattani Campus''s signature orientation activities, designed to introduce participants to Pattani''s unique multicultural identity. Rather than simply visiting historical landmarks, the program offers an experiential learning journey where participants discover the stories, traditions, and communities that have shaped Pattani into one of Southern Thailand''s most culturally diverse provinces.
The activity began early in the morning as thousands of PSU Jacaranda 59 students gathered on the university field at 5:00 a.m. Despite the early hour, the atmosphere was vibrant and full of enthusiasm. As part of Group 88, together with my fellow Indonesian participants, I joined Route C, where we were grouped with Thai students from different provinces across Thailand, including Krabi, Phatthalung, and Hat Yai. Although we had just met, everyone was eager to introduce themselves, exchange stories, and build new friendships. The welcoming atmosphere immediately reflected the spirit of unity and cultural exchange that the program aimed to promote.
After the gathering, participants traveled by university buses to the starting point of the heritage route. The opening ceremony was officially led by the Vice President of Prince of Songkla University, Pattani Campus, who welcomed participants and highlighted the importance of learning about Pattani''s cultural heritage through direct experience. As the journey began, members of the PSU Pattani Student Union (SU) enthusiastically greeted participants with energetic drum performances, cheerful dances, and entertaining performances that filled the streets with excitement. Their enthusiasm encouraged everyone to stay energized throughout the walk, creating a festive atmosphere from the very beginning.
One of the most heartwarming moments occurred when the organizing committee learned that we were from Indonesia. Although some of them were not fluent in English and we could not communicate in Thai, they sincerely made every effort to interact with us. Using simple English, gestures, smiles, and laughter, they continuously tried to start conversations, ask about Indonesia, and ensure that we felt included. Their kindness and genuine hospitality were truly touching. It reminded me that meaningful communication is not always defined by language, but by the willingness to connect with others. Their friendliness made us feel welcomed from the moment we arrived and allowed us to enjoy the entire experience comfortably.
Throughout Route C, participants explored several important cultural and historical landmarks representing Pattani''s rich multicultural identity. The heritage route included destinations such as Ban Luang (PSU Pattani Museum), Ban Khun Phithak Raya, House No. 5, Lim Ko Niao Shrine, Phraya Phichit Museum, Wat Tani Norasamosorn, Raya Fathoni Mosque, Pattani Central Mosque, the Pattani Hokkien Chinese Association, Haji Sulong House, and Ban Yok Din. Each site reflected a different chapter of Pattani''s history, illustrating how Thai, Malay, Chinese, and Islamic cultures have coexisted and contributed to the city''s identity over many generations.
Throughout the journey, local guides and volunteers shared the historical background, cultural significance, and unique stories behind each destination. Rather than simply observing historical buildings, participants gained a deeper understanding of the values of coexistence, mutual respect, and religious harmony that continue to shape everyday life in Pattani. The experience demonstrated that cultural heritage is preserved not only through monuments and architecture but also through the people and traditions that remain alive within the community. Along the route, participants also had many opportunities to interact with one another, exchange stories, and learn about different cultural backgrounds. These conversations, combined with the shared experience of exploring Pattani together, created a friendly atmosphere and strengthened new friendships among students from different regions and countries.
From my perspective, this activity became one of the most meaningful experiences I have had at Prince of Songkla University, Pattani Campus. Beyond discovering Pattani''s historical landmarks and multicultural heritage, I experienced the genuine warmth and hospitality of the people I met throughout the journey. The friendships formed with students from different regions of Thailand, the encouragement from the Student Union, and the kindness shown by the organizing committee demonstrated that cultural exchange is built through simple acts of openness, respect, and human connection. More than a city tour, the Pattani Heritage City Route became an unforgettable learning experience that celebrated diversity, friendship, and the spirit of living together in harmony.
