PSU Faculty of Science champions “Intelligent Science for a Sustainable Future” National Science Week 2026 as a full-scale low-carbon event
The Faculty of Science, Prince of Songkla University (PSU) is preparing to host the Regional National Science Week 2026, from 18-20 August 2026 at PSU Hat Yai Campus. This year, the event will be held under the theme “Intelligent Science for a Sustainable Future,” with a strong commitment to becoming a full-scale Low Carbon Event and a model for environmentally responsible fairs in southern Thailand.
Prof. Dr. Anchana Prathep, Dean of the Faculty of Science, explained that advancing the country today requires a strong foundation in science. This year’s theme therefore highlights the role of science, technology, and innovation in improving quality of life while driving economic, social, and environmental development toward a more sustainable future.
“For us, ‘Intelligent Science’ is not limited to artificial intelligence or AI. It also refers to the intelligent application of scientific knowledge together with modern technologies, Big Data, and automation to address increasingly complex challenges - from climate change and the energy crisis to natural resource management and food security,” Dr. Anchana said.
One of the key highlights of this year’s National Science Week is the Faculty’s effort to put sustainability into practice through a Low Carbon Event approach designed to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.
Dr. Anchana emphasized that sustainability must go beyond discussion and be translated into tangible action. The event venue will therefore serve as a large-scale learning space demonstrating sustainable practices in everyday life.
Waste management stations will be provided throughout the event, while
free drinking-water refill stations will encourage students and visitors
to bring their own reusable bottles. The initiative aims to
significantly reduce single-use plastic waste, particularly with tens of
thousands of visitors expected throughout the event.
The Faculty hopes these practical measures will demonstrate to young
people that creating a sustainable future can begin with simple actions
and shared responsibility for the planet.
Science competitions and project exhibitions remain among the major
highlights of the event. This year, nearly 500 science projects have
been submitted by schools across southern Thailand in three main
categories: Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Applied
Sciences.
Projects selected for the final round will be presented and judged at
the Faculty of Science, PSU, providing young innovators with an
opportunity to showcase their ideas and compete at the regional level.
The event also extends learning opportunities beyond students. A science teaching media competition for teachers will provide a platform for educators to exchange innovative teaching approaches and explore new methods that can enhance science education in the digital era.
