From public space to social innovation hub: PSU Surat Thani transforms “Thung Sai Chai” through research and community collaboration




Thung Sai Chai” in Surat Thani Province, once a public-use area under the Royal Forest Department, is now being transformed into a Social Innovation Hub through the efforts of Prince of Songkla University, particularly the Surat Thani Campus. By integrating research, academic knowledge, and strong community partnerships, the area is being developed into a tangible resource-based economic model.




According to Mr. Supachai Rakwong, Head of the Advanced Institute for Food Security, Prince of Songkla University the site has been utilized for over 30 years and holds significant potential in terms of geography and surrounding community diversity. It is now being developed as a model area for food security and sustainable social development. 

The development is guided by the BCG Model, alongside ESG principles and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on holistic resource management, waste reduction, value creation, and efficient resource circulation. These efforts aim to lower production costs, enhance food standards and safety, and support environmental sustainability — ultimately positioning the area as a future hub for high-quality food production in Southern Thailand.



Today, Thung Sai Chai serves as a field-based research site that connects researchers, government agencies, private sectors, and local communities across fisheries, livestock, and agriculture. One notable achievement is the development of advanced oyster breeding techniques, which have significantly increased productivity, reduced risks, and improved income for local fishing communities.



In addition, the area functions as a learning center for students, farmers, and the general public nationwide, offering internships, short training programs, and non-degree courses to build professional skills, create economic opportunities, and empower community leaders.

The transformation of Thung Sai Chai represents more than just area development it lays the foundation for a social innovation ecosystem that bridges knowledge with practical application, reflecting PSU’s commitment to driving sustainable national development.
