Metric: Support of arts and heritage

Provide public access to buildings and/or monuments or natural heritage landscapes of cultural significance

Prince of Songkla University (PSU) is the first university in southern Thailand, established in 1967. PSU consists of five campuses, with the first permanent campus established in Pattani province in 1968. The location is collectively recognized as a multicultural society, comprising three important cultures: Islamic, Buddhist, and Chinese traditions. The PSU Pattani campus has been key in promoting this multicultural uniqueness through teaching, research, community outreach, and cultural preservation. To enhance cultural learning spaces for the public, PSU Pattani has preserved several ancient buildings and monuments of historical and cultural significance, which are open to all visitors free of charge.

A Monument of Prince Mahidol Adulyadej

The name "Prince of Songkla University" was granted by King Bhumibol Adulyadej in honor of Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, Prince of Songkla, the King’s father. Each campus of PSU has erected a monument to Prince Mahidol Adulyadej to honor him as the "Father of Modern Medicine and Public Health" in Thailand and as the father of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX). Prince Mahidol played a pivotal role in advancing medical education and public health in Thailand during the early 20th century. The monument typically features a statue of Prince Mahidol in a seated or standing posture, often holding a book, symbolizing his commitment to education, research, and public service.
