Eco-service enhancement of Pru Chim Plee as a reserve reservoir for reducing drought and flood risk for agriculture in Chaeng Sae sub-district, Krasaesin district, Songkhla phase II

In 2024, experts from Prince of Songkla University acted as advisors to community researchers in Chaeng Sae Subdistrict in conducting community-based research on “Eco-service enhancement of Chim Plee Peat Swamp Forest as a reserve reservoir for reducing drought and flood risk for agriculture in Chaeng Sae subdistrict, Krasaesin district, Songkhla phase II” supported by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT). This initiative involves collaboration with local, regional, and national entities, including the local subdistrict administrative organization, the Office of Irrigation, and other government bodies. This project aims to promote the practical implementation of the guidelines for utilizing Pru Chim Plee as a reserve reservoir, raise awareness and knowledge among youth and the local community about peatland conservation, and identify measures for local farmers to reduce risks from floods and droughts before the swamp’s development as a reservoir. This research adopts a participatory action research (PAR) approach and integrates community-based research with focused scientific studies. The results have enabled the agencies responsible for water management to acknowledge the community’s needs in developing the Chim Plee Peat Swamp Forest as a reserve reservoir and to consider incorporating some elements of the guidelines into their own plans. Furthermore, youth and communities in the area have gained knowledge and awareness of the importance of the Chim Plee Peat Swamp Forest. Community-based research emphasizes community participation in the research process, from problem analysis, research question definition, and research methodology design to data collection and analysis. This will enable research to truly and sustainably solve community problems.
