13.4.1 Commitment to carbon neutral university

Metric: Commitment to carbon neutral university

Have a target date by which it will become carbon neutral according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocols?

Prince of Songkla University is advancing toward sustainable development in alignment with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established from 2015 to 2030. This initiative is also consistent with the objectives of the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24), which aims to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2030 to prevent global temperatures from rising above 1.5 degrees Celsius.

By the authority vested under Sections 34 and 39 of the Prince of Songkla University Act B.E. 2559, the university has issued the following declaration on the Net Zero Emission Policy B.E. 2566 (2023):

  1. Promote Collaboration on Climate Change

    • Encourage cooperation to address the impact of climate change from greenhouse gas emissions caused by university activities.
  2. Promote Reduction of Direct Greenhouse Gas Emissions

    • Actions include:
      • Improving energy and resource efficiency.
      • Reducing fossil fuel energy consumption.
      • Regular maintenance of building cooling systems.
      • Supporting low-emission transportation options such as walkways, bicycles, and electric vehicles.
      • Promoting development and improvement of low-emission travel routes within and around the campus.
  3. Promote Reduction of Energy-Related Indirect Emissions

    • Actions include:
      • Increasing the proportion of clean energy, which has minimal environmental impact.
      • Expanding the use of renewable energy sources to reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
  4. Promote Reduction of Other Indirect Emissions

    • Actions include:
      • Efficient waste management and aiming for zero waste to landfill.
      • Effective water and wastewater management, with increased rainwater harvesting and recycled water usage.
      • Offering primarily plant-based foods, organic vegetables, and healthy food options (e.g., low-sugar beverages, low-calorie menus).
      • Increasing the use of environmentally friendly products.
      • Organizing eco-friendly activities and practices on campus.
      • Divesting from organizations that rely heavily on coal and oil.
  5. Promote Greenhouse Gas Removal

    • Actions include:
      • Increasing green spaces by at least 10% of building areas.
      • Planting more trees around building perimeters.
